Alexandra Slava is a traditional sculptor, art educator, and the founder of Berlin Sculpture Atelier—an art space that serves both as her private studio and a learning center dedicated to figurative sculpture.

She began her artistic journey at a young age in her native Kyiv, Ukraine, and later moved to Florence, Italy, to refine skills and deepen her appreciation for classical art at the Florence Academy of Art.

Since graduating, Slava has lived and worked as an independent artist in several countries, including Italy, Poland, and Germany. Now based in Berlin, she devotes much of her time to teaching passionate students while continuing to explore and expand the boundaries of traditional art in her personal work

Sculpting Torsos

a workshop by Alexandra Slava

Join experienced sculptor Alexandra Slava for this immersive one-day workshop on sculpting a torso from a live model—open to participants of all skill levels and creative goals.

The torso is a compelling genre of figurative sculpture, offering a unique opportunity to study the human form in depth and explore its aesthetic qualities. Anatomically, the torso forms the core of the human body, consisting of two major masses—the rib cage and pelvis—connected by the spinal column. Their relative positioning defines the figure’s overall gesture and determines the arrangement of its volumetric forms. A focused study of the torso and its proportions is therefore a fundamental step in mastering figurative sculpture.

In this hands-on course, you’ll sculpt a one-third life-size torso in water-based clay, working over an armature and drawing directly from observation of a live model. Throughout the workshop, you’ll deepen your understanding of human proportion, anatomy, and gesture—bringing a dynamic sense of realism to your work.

In this course, you will learn:

- Fundamentals of traditional sculpture

- Essential sculpting tools, materials, and equipment

- How to observe and interpret form in three dimensions

- Anatomy and structure of the human body

- How to assess pose and gesture

- Principles of clay modeling and composition

The instruction emphasizes an intuitive, observational approach—focusing on careful visual analysis rather than precise measurements. The abstract nature of the torso invites close attention to expressive form and compositional clarity.

The workshop begins with a comprehensive lecture on the internal structure of the human body. The remainder of the day is devoted to sculpting from life, supported by individual critiques, additional lectures, live demonstrations, and group discussions.

Completed sculptures can be preserved through firing or casting for an additional fee outside of class."
