Rembert Montald believes the best way to tell a story is to show it. His advanced skills have been put to use for projects such as League of Legends, Valorant, Harbor and Legends of Runeterra, among others. Intrigued by the intricacies of visual storytelling, Rembert pursued an education in animation and art in Brussels, Belgium, and later Gobelins, Paris. After working on a variety of things, including storyboards for animated movies and even theme parks, he decided Belgium was a little too small for him. Since then, he’s lived and worked all over the globe, including Croatia, Germany, Portugal, and the U.S.A. He worked at Riot Games for almost 7 years, but he is currently collaborating with Lightspeed LA on their upcoming title Last Sentinel. In March 2024 his sketchbook Figured Out was released by Editions Caurette.

Putting it in Perspective – Figure Drawing for Posing and Storytelling

A workshop by Rembert Montald

Figure drawing is great for improving one's artistic eye and working on all skills needed to become a better artist, including but not limited to: understanding form and volume, proportions, rendering, storytelling, color, value and perspective. This workshop takes figure drawing as the medium to broaden your artistic understanding and to make your final illustrations and sketches more imaginative, impactful and deliberately composed. This will be achieved by focusing on the impact of choosing a perspective and point of view consciously, as well as considering storytelling aspects and the use and manipulation of references.

You will learn the following things:

-          Defining story and context for your drawing. How to come up with an idea? How to pose the model/ find and choose a good reference.

-          Rules of perspective and how it influences composition and story.

-          How to place a figure in perspective and how to iterate using thumbnailing and the model/ reference.

-          Process of taking an illustration to the finish step by step, using these tools.

For this 1 ½ day workshop Rembert and you will be working with a life model. The workshop will include theoretical parts and demos, as well as practical exercises, working with a life model and personal feedback to your drawings by Rembert. This workshop is not tied down to a specific medium, so you are welcome to use whichever one you feel most comfortable with. Rembert will be using toned paper and gouache, as well as other traditional and digital media, if the need arises.

This workshop is suitable for intermediate to advanced artists. You should have a basic understanding of figure drawing and be interested in expanding that knowledge. If you are uncertain about your level and if this workshop is suitable for your needs please feel free to reach out to us via email with some examples of your recent work, Instagram profile, portfolio etc.
