FACES -
Portrait Drawing Explorations

A workshop by Julian Dieckert

In this immersive full-day workshop, artist Julian Dieckert guides participants through the art of portrait drawing — not just as a technical exercise, but as an exploration of expression, courage, and imperfection.

The focus lies on capturing the human face through a variety of media while stepping beyond comfort zones. Together, we’ll challenge perfectionism and the fear of failure — two common companions in portrait work — and instead embrace the unpredictable, the expressive, and the beautifully flawed.

The day begins with a grounding session in anatomy and structure, ensuring everyone shares a common understanding of facial proportions and form. From there, Julian leads the group away from strict technicality into a freer, more intuitive way of drawing. Participants will experiment with different and “uncomfortable” materials, explore new approaches to mark-making, and learn to find a personal balance between realism and expressive abstraction.

Through guided exercises, discussion, and playful experimentation, you’ll discover that the most powerful portraits often emerge when control is loosened — when mistakes become character, and hesitation turns into boldness.

This workshop welcomes artists of all levels who wish to deepen their understanding of portraiture while liberating their creative process.
