Calligraphy Workshop - From one line to a work of art

a workshop by Parisurteil

Calligraphy has always been close to your heart, but now you want to truly get a hands-on feel for it? Or maybe you usually just draw but are interested in design aesthetics in a broader sense? Then this workshop is for you!
Learning calligraphy is a great tool to strengthen ones sense of proportion and composition because it trains the eye to notice subtle relationships between line, space, and balance. The practice demands precision and intentional mark-making, which can directly be translated into your drawing and painting practice. Furthermore it improves penmanship, confidence, and overall design work.

In this 7-hour introductory Fraktur course, we will devote ourselves to one of the most beautiful products of German culture: the Fraktur script.

The workshop is suitable for all levels.
We will begin by placing our first strokes in a way worthy of a Gothic cathedral, and finish by thoughtfully laying out and writing a complete sentence in Fraktur script.

Specifically, we will cover:

  • The basic anatomy of Fraktur script

  • Writing lowercase and uppercase letters

  • Combining letters into words

  • Combining words into sentences in a layout

By the end of the workshop, you should leave holding a finished work of art in your hands, with a tired smile on your face and the determination to keep writing.

Materials that will be provided:

  • Pilot Parallel Pens (6 mm)

  • High-quality printer paper and a watercolor pad

  • 2H pencils

  • Rulers

  • Handouts and course materials

Parisurteil is a calligrapher and urban artist. He had his first real contact with calligraphy in 2015 and never stopped writing frenetically since. It soon turned out that he has a deep love for blackletter fonts.

Parisurteil combines the traditional art of calligraphy with elements of urban art, using materials, backgrounds & themes from the writer scene. The topics in his work revolve around literature, politics, philosophy and language.

The name "Parisurteil" alludes to a Greek myth, in which the Trojan prince Paris is to choose the most beautiful goddess and, because of his choice, gets not only Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world, but also plunges Troy into ruin.
